Guatemala Coffee
Guatemalan coffee is produced in areas with key geographical characteristics, including the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, large volcanic regions (Volcan de Pacaya, Agua, Fuego, Acatenango), and the high Sierra Mountains. SHB coffee, the highest quality grade, is grown at over 1,400 meters above sea level.Different soils and climates meet at high altitudes to create distinctive regional coffee flavordifferences. It has distinct dry and rainy seasons and large daily temperature and humidity differences, making it an ideal environment for growing coffee. Additionally, Guatemala's "coffee belt" is connected by 34 volcanoes and has optimal climatic conditions for making good coffee, including a microclimate and soil rich in minerals.Since coffee was first brought to Guatemala nearly two centuries ago, 98% of coffee is shade grown and 98% is Arabica.Shade grown methods moderate and filter the intensity and quality of sunlight to regulate crop respiration and photosynthesis and this prevents damage to the roots and leaves of the coffee plant. (305,000 hectares of coffee farmland, coffee grown in 20 of the country's 22 provinces, 125,000 coffee workers)
